POM-CAM

by Long Nguyen
Feb 11, 2011 at 17:22

Do you like helmet cams? Do you have an iPhone 4? Well check this out. Andrew Taylor and his Partner Shelby Paget have been working incognito around close friends over the past few months developing a waterproof housing for the I Phone 4.

AT told me about the project a few weeks ago and it has been eating away at my insides not being able to tell anyone until now. They finally release their product on Kickstarter.com today looking for supporters like you and I.

Click here to check out the video behind the POM-CAM.

First off, thanks for stopping by and checking out our project. We have put in a lot of time and effort to make this project a success. We hope you like it!

The POM is the only way to turn your iPhone 4 into the ultimate point of view camera. By sliding your iPhone into the housing and using our mounts you can experience the Point of Me in perfect HD.

THE HOUSING FEATURES:
- Quality wide angle lens
- Black rubberized shell
- Locking slider
- Hinged door for easy installation
- Water resistant
- Shock resistant
- Usable touchscreen and buttons
- Waterproof headphone and out-bore microphone jack

BASE FRAME FEATURES:
- Protects touch screen
- Quick release buttons to easily eject the POM housing

THE MOUNTING FEATURES:
- All mounts are easily interchangeable with the Base
- Pivoting chest strap mount
- Pivoting suction mount
- Pivoting bar mount
- Pivoting adhesive helmet mount

FAQ's...
How does my iPhone 4 fit into the POM housing?
The housing opens like a book and your iPhone 4 slides into place and is secured safely with the locking slider.

How does the POM housing lock into the base?
By sliding the housing into the locking pin system it is securely fastened to the base.

How do I eject the housing from the base?
By pressing two eject buttons located on the sides of the base the locking pins release the housing.

If I crash when using my POM will my phone be safe from harm?
We have made sure the structure of the housing will withstand heavy impacts while enduring extreme use.

Is it waterproof?
Our final product will be tested and approved up to 10 meters.

I think you're shooting for the stars with this goal!
We have spent our life savings designing and developing a quality product. Now we are reaching out to enthusiasts like you to help us raise money to cover tooling and setup cost for mass manufacturing of the POM. The product is comprised of over 17 unique pieces with each piece requiring its own tooling. This is why we have made our goal larger than most on Kickstarter. We believe Kickstarter and YOU can help us reach our goal.

More about the POM...
In a generation obsessed with instant gratification and updates to our favorite social networks we can incorporate all of these things and more with the POM and keep the world, or maybe just your best buds, on the edge of their seats.

With the POM housing you can use your iPhone 4 to record your adventures with a wide angle lens. Whether you get your fill on wheels, in the powder, or out in the deep blue the POM will keep your phone safe from impact, scratches, and water damage while still allowing you to get that perfect shot anywhere.

We’ve chosen Kickstarter to help us continue our dream. With our experiences using this product and putting together the edit above of our adventures with the POM, we know that this will soon be a must have for any adrenaline junky with an iPhone 4! We are asking for your support to continue the process of tooling for the first full line of production. We have funded the project ourselves thus far and are asking for your support. We have put together a variety of support tiers that you can commit to. You will be receiving the POM at a discounted price if you pre-order through Kickstarter! If you are a enthusiast who lives in the world of adventure sports, the POM is something you can take on your never ending journey. Pre-order yours today and we promise you won’t be disappointed!

Check out our video for some awesome shots with the POM and hear our story of how everything came together.

Thanks for your support and please help us spread the word!

 Hey Guys!

Just wanted to follow up with some additional questions/concerns you guys have addressed. To the users with these concerns or to those who haven't had time to read over the whole article; Quite a few people have brought up their concerns about the protection of their phones being compromised in a crash or something similar. I would like to assure you guys that we have literally taken MANY steps to make sure that everything attribute mentioned on our features section and every environment that we've used the POM in, WILL keep your iPhone safe and we can even go further to say that we have crashed during our own motocross, and downhill shots with the housing and have had no issues when the POM hits the ground harder than anticipated. We would not sale a product with my name or Andrew Taylor's name on it without delivering an exceptional final product to you guys. Keep in mind too that we ourselves ride daily and we are the ones that have come up with the necessary features and composites (plastic and rubber strengths/thicknesses) to keep our iPhones safe while riding at a professional level with the POM. Hope this helps you guys know that you are receiving a professionally tested (from an engineering standpoint) and rider tested product that has exceeded our own expectations in all cases! Smile Thanks - Shelby @ POM

Even if all precautions are taken, i wouldn't want to put my 600$ smart phone at risk for sub-standard video quality. You can say everything you want about security precautions, mountain biking is a sport with different variable where ever and when ever you ride. So saying it's been professionally tested by one or two riders doesn't really make sense. If you crash, there is a chance of breaking your iphone, and there is no possible way you can tell us otherwise. Good idea, but not the way i see the market progressing, unless you're able to make this product dirt cheap.
  • + 4
flag z-man (Feb 12, 2011 at 15:20)
And at 160 USD i would say that it isn't cheap. Too many better choices on the market these days for not much more.

flag badbadleroybrown (Feb 12, 2011 at 16:33)
I agree with Z-Man, for marginally more money you can have an actual dedicated POV camera and never have to worry about your iPhone getting destroyed... and let's be honest, if an Aluminium downhill frame can break, then so can your plastic case. Add to that the fact that iPhone video is only on par with the very cheapest POV cam's and all you've done is create an expensive way to multiply the amount you have invested in 'recording' equipment while getting substandard video. Great idea for a school project, horrible idea for an actual product.

To put it simply:
iPhone Retail: $599 (720p/30fps max video res)
POM Retail: $129
Total potential loss: $728 (+all the features of your phone while you wait for a new one)

GoPro Retail: $179.99 (960p/30fps max video res)
Total Potential loss: $179.99

Difference: $548.01 plus whatever value you place on having to do without a phone.

ya, its a neat idea but I dont know how realistic it is. Phones still break, even in shock resistant cases. It would suck to crash and have a broken cam and a broken phone. then how are you going to call your mom for a ride home?

go pro- $300.00 lcd- $80 16g Storage Card $60 and there is no movie editor or instant upload to social networks not to mention you need a computer and editing software to even begin to put the GoPro footy anywhere viewable. I think this is legit and cost out weighs convenience for me since i always ride with my phone in my pocket anyways...

@Everyone complaining about breaking their phone - just get phone insurance that covers accidental damage! Just tell them you were riding your bike and fell off (and hope they don't ask too many questions - making the usual presumption that the downhill is they easy bit!)

The only problem I can see is that Apple are due to release the iPhone 5 in about 6 months (probably before this hits the market) and another new model every year after that! The only way I can actually see this working is if they can come up with a way of standardising the mounts and making the case that houses the phone and hooks into the mount available cheaper to go with your mounting kit.

I think the theory is sweet, but can't quite see how it will work in reality!

I don't have to say anything because KURTSUCKS already said it for me. The last thing I think about after a run is posting it online. That's just my opinion, I'm not hip with the I phone trend though. I do all my computing at home.

@spoonyman, this is already on the market, (refering to te second paragraph of ur comment...)
@antron , really why is it so bad to upload it right after the run instead of waiting till u get home? then spoonyman's second comment does make sence, the chairlift take about 5 mins... (i can only base that on a rough estimation of the highland chairlift, bcuz thats the only one ive been on) and u can upload vids from an iphone during that time... so really its like every new idea on the home page when theres always some one bashing on it, but for reals, why the hell not? and if u dont like its not anyone is forcing you to buy it..

i work for telus mobility. if you break your iphone by smashing it between your face and a rock : apple won't replace it for free. if you purchase an exchange program (really not free) they can do it. if it is partly broke : they can repare it (not free)

and i'm with the human side : prefer to drink a beer with friends saying "heyyyy duuuudeeee do you remember when i hit those jumps!!" instead of taking times to post it on facebook where 95% of my virtual friends don't really care/understand mountain bikes.

i'll stick with gopro. and really hope never have to receive a call from a mom screaming outlout that we f*cked them because we don't want to replace for free the exploded iphone 4 of her 17year old son.

 Hey Guys,

When new iPhone models come out we will be rolling out with new POM setups to suit each model. The reason why we are starting with the iPhone 4 initially is because there are over 900,000,000 users worldwide and Verizon just introduced the iPhone 4 (which works with our POM as well) and most of these users are in a 2 year contract with either ATT or Verizon suggesting that there will be iPhone 4 users around for awhile longer. But do not worry because as soon as the iPhone 5 is released and later models we will be designing a POM to accommodate any changes and/or updates to design. Smile Hope this answers some questions! - Shelby @ POM

Great idea - As I read this I was pretty stoked. I got a go pro HD but thought it could be cool to have shots from multiple angles on the same run but I think the price might be too steep. I'd think something like this would do really well in the $50-90 dollar price range. Personally close to $200.00 isn't worth it - especially when you can get a go pro HD with better battery life, more flexible memory, for $300.00. Plus you run the risk of busting your $800.00 phone. For someone with a gopro HD and an iphone4 it'd be cool to simply have a iphone4 app with bluetooth that would let you view the video from the gopro HD afterwards and edit / upload.

No doubt it's a good concept but I just can't see it being very popular. It's quite simply just too prone to damage in a crash. Mountain bikers crashing is inevitable and it doesn't take a big gumby stack to rip it off, a simple bail off could just as easily smash it to pieces as a big wipeout.

The only mount which looks like it might work is the chest mount but it's still the core product is expensive to invest in and in essence not designed for this purpose. Not to mention the cost (not just the money, but everything associated with your phone being out of action) if you do munt your iphone.

edit: badbadleroybrown has summed it up nicely, I posted before I read it Razz

edit2: After reading through all the comments and the replies from the developer all I'll say is that the downsides far, far, far outweigh the capabilities of the product.

I don't want to tear you guys to shreds because you had the balls to try something out, but I think you let your vision get in the way of reality here. Better luck next time guys.

Very interesting product...maybe priced a little overly aggressive at $129 considering you can get a GoPro HD Hero 960 for $179. Furthermore replacement housing for a GoPro is $40. If your case was $30 - $40, I think it would do really well.

The touch through screen also looks a little flimsy, you should talk to Ivyskin and see how they did their touch through screen, as it is a very durable protector a video here : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a92eX85gJG8&feature=player_embedded#at=27

That case is the same as the Reception and is $14.99, granted your case has more options hence why I would say $40 is a good price point.

Great idea...interesting way to raise funds without having investors with venture capital take a good chunk of your business...good luck guys! Good looking product.

Looked for one of these for ages for my iPhone 3GS, gave up. I carry my phone with me on every ride in my pocket and have attached it to the bars with a couple of large rubber bands for filming!! I live in rainy England not sunny California, so it always gets wet..I probably crash at least once each time I'm out, including into wet ditches and streams, my phone has always taken great pictures and vids and is still going strong...and anyway if it did get broken it's insured under the contract, so I'd just get a new one...insurance is only $5 a month, that's over 2 years of insurance for the price of your case...don't get me wrong it's a great idea and if it was $20-$30 I might consider it, but I agree I'd get a dedicated camera for $129 plus a bit...but good luck..

We have been using the POM more than ever to make sure that when using the POM and your iPhone 4 you will have the ultimate point of view device on the market! We wanted to address one of the main topics that came up on discussion boards as well as enthusiast forums in regards to the protection capability of the POM for you iPhone 4 i...n the event of a crash or wreck. Like we have mentioned before, we have thoroughly tested our prototypes and have made changes in order to insure that the POM will indefinitely keep your phone safe from impacts as well as water damage.

Here is a clip of our POM going through a very hard crash aboard Andrew Taylor's helmet on a recent downhill ride. As you will see in the video, Andrew takes a wrong turn and slides off of a 10 foot cliff straight to his head and the POM housing taking most of the impact! The POM housing as well as the iPhone were both completely protected, minus some dirt and debris, and the POM and Andrew's iPhone 4 went on to film for the rest of the day!

Great school design project but chance of this hitting the market is zero unless you've a patent/copyright on a bar mount case for iphone4.
There are a million case producers that can bring this to market inside a month without raising funds to do so.. You guys are what? A year away minimum?

I wish you all the best though and congrats on the originality but I don't think this will make you rich... Probably a decent grade at school though.

 Hey Jonnyboy,

Thanks for the input we appreciate it! We have already taken care of our patents and tm's thus far and we have high hopes to to bring a product like this to market using Kickstarter, but if in the instance that we do not reach our goal we have a few investment firms that have already offered to fund our project in excess of our goal if needed. We are on track to have product shipping within 30 days of our goal being met if not earlier so that the customers will have the POM in hand relatively quickly. Smile Hope this decreases in doubts you may have Jonny! Thanks - Shelby @ POM

I for one think this is a great idea. For those of you that think your I phone becomes vulnerable, where do you carry your I phone when you are slamming a run, or hitting the trails???? With this product, you are now able to utilize your I phone with one more capability in regards to digitally video documenting and uploading to where ever you choose, literally seconds after your event.I really believe this product will be an extremely beneficial asset to todays social net working activities.

For those of you that have and do use a Go Pro, and have expierienced frustrations with down loading, editing, then up loading to your social network ,this product , in my opinion eliminates that. Think of the time saved, that none of us have to give.

COME ON GET ON BOARD

Um no thanks, it's too expensive, their sample video is very shaky, the quality isn't that great, it's not waterproof, and riding with an iPhone on your helmet or handlebars is way too bulky.

flag kawi008 (Feb 13, 2011 at 18:29)
Hey Dlpoductionsjasper! The POM is actually waterproof and safe for surfing and water submerged sports up to 2 meters. Stay tuned because we will have a response update video/write up addressing all your guy's questions that have come up so far and hopefully we can put to rest some of the misconceptions of the limitations and design features of the POM. A littel side note... I just got done with a super fun session at Post Office tonight and loved that even though I didn't plan on filming anything, I was able to send some new tricks and film them with my phone (that I've always ridden with in my pocket) and share them with my little brother without sitting down to my computer. Pretty rad in my opinion Smile Keep the questions coming you guys so that we can answer anything that hasn't been brought up already in our Kickstarter update video response this week! We appreciate all your feedback. Thanks - Shelby @ POM

Ive had my GoPro fall of my truck going 40 multiple time when I was offroading and ive crashed with it and slammed it off my head and its perfect. An Iphone in that case with a thin plastic touch pad never would survive. Lets all go buy new Iphones after they break and be out a cell phone and everything else it does. GoPro 1080p HD 200-220$ or Iphone for whatever you paid then a new one for 600$ since you cant get a new one cheap

iPhone does 30fps and you can upload your video with music and other features from iMovie while your still riding without having to use a computer for editing. Also, generally a card for a POV camera costs about $40 for a decent 8g card where as your iPhone generally stores either 16g or 32g which is more than enough room for a few good shots. The POM also incorporates the view finder on the iPhone which many POV cameras charge extra for and they add weight/additional accessories to your riding experience. Lastly, the iphone has great lighting sensors, and in comparison to many POV cameras on the market, the iphone will shoot a crisper, better definition shot in low lighting or lighting conditions that change from low to high lighting quickly. With the iPhone you can also lock your lighting sensor so that it doesn't change at all if preferred. Basically, the POM housing allows you to safely use your iPhone 4 as a POV camera while also allowing you to use the exceptional technology Apple has put into these devices. Thanks! - Shelby @ POM

We are very confident that our product delivered to the customer will be nothing short of what we've promised. The trial and error testing has taken place already and our final product works better than we had imagined. We have done our homework and then some to ensure the quality of the POM so that customers can be sure of what they're receiving. Hope this helps clear some fog Smile Thanks! -Shelby @ POM
